"You're young, Charlie. I don't expect you to understand. I've
come to a point in my life where I need a change. Things can't go on as they have."
"What do you mean, 'a change?' A change of clothes? A change of scenery? What?
You're not making sense, Daddy!" Charlotte was overflowing with anger and fear.
Her world was rapidly changing and there was not a thing she could do about it.
"You've noticed that I haven't been happy lately," Charlton pointed out.
"I just think it's time we went our separate ways."
"'Our separate ways'?" repeated Charlotte, shocked by her father's words.
"Daddy, this is me, Charlie!"
"I know who you are!" shouted Charlton, angrily. "I am your father.
You will do as you are told! Your Aunt Angela will be here this weekend to help you
pack. She'll look out for you from now on. I'm finished." Charlton got up from
the edge of Charlotte's bed and went to his own room. If Charlotte had stayed in
the apartment a minute longer, she would have heard her father's tears.
"Our hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, and pain, as of a woman
in travail."
